Residents exchange pleasantries in the convenience store

Working as a volunteer in a senior living retirement community is personally rewarding, educational and . . . yes, even fun! It is also a perfect opportunity for high school students to earn Community Service Hours (as required to graduate) and for recent retirees to stay involved and active in their community. Are you thinking of entering the healthcare or senior living industry as a career? Then take a test drive by becoming a volunteer at North Oaks.

Fast Facts About Volunteering at North Oaks

Volunteer Activities at North Oaks

Become a Shop Owner: Manage the operations (or, just help out) of our convenience store which is open each Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This entails interacting with customers, running the cash register and stocking the shelves. It is the closest to running a Mom and Pop store that you will ever get.

Teach Computer Skills: Put on your teacher hat and spend one-on-one time with our residents to help them master the use of a computer.

Looking for a Bookworm: Become the master of our library by stocking and organizing books, newspaper and magazines and interacting with residents.

Stop the Presses: We need a reporter to write and help produce our quarterly newsletter. Interviewing residents, taking photos and writing stories will all be in a day’s work.

Knitters Needed: Teach the basics of knitting and work with residents to create projects that are donated to area community groups.

Girl (or Boy) Friday: Handle a variety of activities within our office including typing assignments, creating flyers and other secretarial functions. It is helpful to be proficient in Print Shop or Publisher. Note: some of these activities can be performed from home.

Health Center Assistant: Spend time in the health center by playing bingo, helping with arts and crafts and reading to residents.
